Four Mechanisms That Determine Oocyte Quality

Oocyte quality is not fixed — it is shaped by the follicular environment during the 90 days of maturation. Each mechanism below has targeted nutritional interventions with clinical evidence.

  • Each mature oocyte contains approximately 100,000–200,000 mitochondria — more than any other cell in the body. This density reflects the enormous ATP demand of meiosis, fertilisation, and early embryonic cleavage.
  • Mitochondrial dysfunction reduces ATP output, impairing spindle assembly, chromosome segregation, and the calcium oscillations required for fertilisation. This is a primary driver of aneuploidy in older oocytes.
  • CoQ10 (ubiquinol form) is the rate-limiting cofactor in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Supplementation at 400–600 mg/day has been shown in RCTs to improve oocyte mitochondrial membrane potential and blastocyst development rates.
  • Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) regenerates CoQ10 and glutathione within the mitochondrial matrix, providing a synergistic antioxidant effect at 300–600 mg/day.

Core Supplement Stack

Confirm doses with your practitioner before starting. Supplement for the full 90-day oocyte maturation window.

CoQ10 (ubiquinol)
Dose: 400–600 mg/day
Timing: With meals
Mitochondrial ATP production; rate-limiting electron transport chain cofactor
Melatonin
Dose: 3 mg/night
Timing: 30 min before sleep
Mitochondrial antioxidant; scavenges hydroxyl radicals in follicular fluid
Myo-inositol
Dose: 4,000 mg/day
Timing: Split morning/evening
Spindle assembly; FSH receptor sensitivity; reduces intrafollicular oxidative stress
N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC)
Dose: 600 mg/day
Timing: With food
Glutathione precursor; primary intracellular antioxidant in granulosa cells
Omega-3 DHA/EPA
Dose: 2 g/day
Timing: With meals
Oocyte membrane fluidity; reduces follicular inflammation
Vitamin D3
Dose: Check levels first
Timing: Target 100–150 nmol/L
Granulosa cell function; AMH signalling; progesterone synthesis
Zinc
Dose: 15–25 mg/day
Timing: With food
Tubulin polymerisation for spindle microtubule assembly
Alpha-lipoic acid
Dose: 300–600 mg/day
Timing: Away from meals
Regenerates CoQ10 and glutathione in mitochondrial matrix
Nutritional Strategy

Foods That Shape Oocyte Quality

✓ Prioritise

  • Oily fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel) 3× per week — DHA/EPA for oocyte membranes
  • Eggs daily (whole egg, yolk included) — choline, CoQ10, fat-soluble vitamins
  • Organ meats weekly (liver) — CoQ10, zinc, B12, folate in bioavailable forms
  • Walnuts and Brazil nuts daily — ALA, selenium (2–3 Brazil nuts = daily selenium)
  • Dark leafy greens daily — folate, magnesium, antioxidants
  • Berries daily — anthocyanins reduce follicular oxidative stress
  • Avocado — glutathione, healthy fats for hormone synthesis
  • Legumes 4–5× per week — plant protein, inositol, zinc

✗ Reduce

  • Ultra-processed foods — advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) increase follicular oxidative load
  • Refined sugar — drives hyperinsulinaemia, disrupts follicular androgen balance
  • Trans fats (fried, packaged) — incorporated into oocyte membranes, impairing fluidity
  • Alcohol — depletes zinc, B vitamins, and glutathione; increases oxidative stress
  • Soy in large amounts — phytoestrogens may interfere with follicular oestrogen signalling
  • Plastic-packaged foods — BPA and phthalates are endocrine disruptors that impair follicular development
